What can you put in a skip?

As a general rule, you can put pretty much anything into our skips except hazardous & offensive items.

Prohibited items – What items can’t you put in a skip?

You cannot put hazardous or harmful items into our skip. These include but are not limited to Food waste, TVs, computer monitors, asbestos, tyres, fluorescent tubes, fridges, paint and paint tins (unless empty), plasterboard, POPs, batteries, medical waste, pet or human faeces, gas cylinders, liquids, wet concrete, solvents, oil, petrol, diesel and explosives.

Paint tins – Can you put paint tins in a skip?

You can only put paint tins in a skip if they are completely empty. If you have tins with paint inside, please contact our office for further advice.

Mattresses – Is it OK to put a mattress in a skip?

Yes if split. Mattresses are disposed of differently to general waste. Please contact our office to discuss how we can accept mattresses in our general waste skip. If a mattress is just thrown into our skip without splitting you will be charged extra at the time of collection to cover our additional costs. Prices may vary.

Plasterboard – Is it ok to put plasterboard in a general waste skip ? NO – WHY?

2009 the Environment Agency changed the ruling for disposing of plasterboard. To ensure recovery and recycling correctly. No matter the quantity of plasterboard you cannot co mingle with general waste. It is illegal to put plasterboard in a skip or landfill with mixed waste in the UK. Plasterboard contains gypsum, which reacts with biodegradable waste to produce a toxic gas which is a threat to public health. All Plasterboard waste must be kept dry for disposal and all tiles/ bricks and wood should be removed. POPs – “Persistent Organic Pollutants” Can you put in a skip?

From 1st January 2023 new legislation from the Environment Agency came into effect regarding the storage and disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating/ furniture containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). POPs are poisonous chemical substances that break down slowly and are harmful to both human health & the environment. Items which are affected – waste upholstered domestic seating. For example, sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining room chairs, stools, foot stools, office chairs, futons, bean bags, floor and sofa cushions. For further advice please call our office.

WOOD Disposal - Withdrawal of the Regulatory Position Statement (RPS 250)

If you are working on a building that was constructed before 2007, you will need to treat any wood waste as hazardous waste.
 The law regarding waste wood from demolition & refurbishment activities has changed.  The environment has confirmed withdrawal RPS 250. Effective from 1st September 2023 this means certain waste wood categories which would previously be sent to wood recyclers will now be classed as hazardous unless analysed to prove non hazardous.
Hazardous and potentially hazardous waste wood items from pre 2007 structures will need to be segregated and marked as hazardous.

Tyres – Can you put tyres in a skip?

Tyres cannot be put in to our skips because they must be disposed of in a different way to general waste. Any tyres found in the general waste skip will be charged separately and prices may vary. Alternatively they will be returned to the hirer.

Soil and rubble – Can you put soil or rubble in a skip?

Yes, you can put soil or rubble into our skips. Please inform us at the time of booking your skip.

Fridges and Freezers – Can you put fridges/ freezers in skips?

You cannot put a fridge or freezer in our skips. Some councils offer a free collection service for refrigeration units, otherwise you may have to take it to your local tip or pay for a specialist collection.

TV and CRTs – Can you put an old TV in a skip?

No, televisions or computer monitors cannot be put in our skips. Please contact our office for further advice.

Asbestos – Can you put asbestos in a skip?

NO You cannot put asbestos or any suspect looking material, for example under cloak board, in any of our skips. It cannot be recycled under any circumstances. If you have asbestos or other hazardous materials, you should contact our office and we will help to direct you to the correct specialists.
